The campus of Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Shimla-1, H.P comprises of Administrative block (Block-A), Block- B, Old Block and Science Block. Digital Notice Board has been installed in the campus of the college. E-library facility is also available with INFLIBNET facility. To enhance the learning of the students, free Wi-Fi facility is also provided for students and staff members in different buildings. This college is under the surveillance of CCTV cameras installed at different locations of the campus.
The new administrative block commonly known as Block-A, it has the Principal office, Administrative office, IQAC room, staff room, office of self financing courses and controller of house examination, girls common room, Departments of Painting/Commercial Art, Geography and Music etc. This building in-houses an infirmary and bank facility on the ground floor. In this block adequate parking facility is also available in the basement and an open air stage is also provided for different cultural activities in the college campus.
A freshly constructed building consists of 10 lecture theatres, 02 smart class rooms, and one video conferencing room. The lecture halls of this building can accommodate 70 to 80 students in one time. The top floor has 4 lecture halls (2 smart class rooms, 1video conferencing room &1 lecture theatre) followed by 3 lecture halls (on each floor) in first, second and ground floors. The basement floor has a canteen for staff, students and sports room with gymnasium.
Adding charm to the rich heritage of our historical college, on the top floor of this block a well furnished Library having INFLIBNET facility, Department of Dance, 7 classrooms, DSW room and Department of Psychology.
This block at the top most floor in-houses a multipurpose auditorium with green room and store facilities. The other five stories of this block has five departments i.e Department of Zoology on fifth floor, Department of Botany on fourth floor, Department of Chemistry on third floor, Department of Physics on second floor, Department of Home Science on first floor, this floor also has E- Commerce lab & Language lab, on the ground floor Micro-biology &Biotechnology lab and faculty rooms has been provided for different departments. All the departments are having well equipped laboratories, separate room for each faculty and lab attendant rooms with store rooms. In total, this block has 11 classrooms, 02 smart classrooms and faculty rooms have been allotted for different departments including English, Hindi, History, Economics, Journalism, Sanskrit and Commerce etc. On the top floor of the Tribal Hostel BCA and PGDCA labs are established with Wi-Fi facility to facilitate the students of the concerned departments and also for other students and staff.
Two hostels have been constructed within the short distance of the main campus of the college. Tribal hostel: It caters to the needs of the students coming from different areas across the country especially the Great Himalayan range including Districts of Kinnaur & Lahaul-Spiti and Upper area regions of Shimla, Sirmour and Chamba districts, a special hostel was constructed in year 2003. Presently, this hostel is accommodating more than 95 students. Sainik Hostel: Sainik Hostel the oldest hostel has been serving the college more than 30 five and has the capacity to accommodate around 75 students.
The college ensures the smooth functioning of its physical, academic support facilities under the strict adherence of the rules and regulations of the state Government regarding the maintenance of these support facilities. The Principal being the administrative head, along with the Advisory board plans and frames the committees to ensure smooth functioning of the college. The college has devised its own mechanism to sustain and utilise these facilities to its fullest and this is achieved with the help and support of the Hostel Committee, Building Committee, Campus Beautification Committee and the Advisory Committee which are constituted at the college level at the beginning of every academic year.
The college sustain these facilities on the income generated from Building fund, Amalgamated fund, Book Replacement fund, Library fund, Self- Finance courses fund, NCC, NSS, Rovers and Rangers fund etc. Committees maintaining the support facilities conduct annual surveys of all the facilities and submit their requisition regarding the repair, maintenance or updation of these facilities to the principal. Expenditure from PTA fund is only made after a General House meeting of PTA which is presided over by the Patron, the Principal of the college, President (parent) and other members.
Further requisitions regarding physical, academic and support facilities are sort from the concerned authorities and efforts are made to accomplish all the jobs within a stipulated period so that students can benefit from this. Regular maintenance and upkeep of the laboratories is ensured by the lab incharges under the supervision of the HODs of the concerned department. Adequacy of the material / instruments is ensured through the regular purchase and maintenance of record in the stock register. HODs can also directly submit the requirement to the Principal for ensuring the smooth functioning of the academic activities.
Regular cleanliness and maintenance of all the facilities is ensured and monitored by the college Superintendent. All the issues related to hostel fall under the purview of the respective wardens and the demands related to the hostel too can be put forth to the Principal by the warden or the boarders directly. To promote academic excellence and competence, the addition of new books is made regularly with a prior feedback or recommendation of the faculty. Complying to the Government norms the money is utilised fully in the welfare of the students.
The College maintains a well furnished and a well equipped Girls’ Common Room with a capacity for 100 students.
