The Department of Painting was started at Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalaya, Shimla along with the establishment of the institute. After the demolishment of Government School of Arts and Crafts, Shimla; RKMV was among the first women colleges in Himachal Pradesh to provide an undergraduate degree in painting.

The curriculum is intended to teach students the creative and technical skills needed to develop them for professions available in the art field.

The three year undergraduate programme not only provides professional academic qualification but inculcates the students with non-academic benefits such as creativity, aesthetic awareness, social harmony , self-esteem and cultural exposure.

The study of human anatomy involves the understanding of skeletal, muscular, and surface structure of the human body to help students draw a human form as it appears in various positions or postures.

Meaning, Scope and Fundamentals of art

The course develops the basic understanding of fundamentals of visual art (line, shape, form, colour, texture, tonal values, perspective etc.) and principles of composition (proportion, unity, harmony,rhythm, contrast, balance, and emphasis etc.). It also focuses on the scope of art in the society.

The study of still life focuses on the development of fundamental skills of drawing. It helps students to understand the shape, form and light source of the given model.

The objective of the course is to acquaint students with the expressive capacities and characteristic surface texture of different mediums used in painting determined by the vehicle with which it is bound and thinned, the process of preparation, and the tools and technique with which it is handled.

The course would help students to observe the evolution and synthesis of Western Art by studying the life and artwork of various artists belonging to different time periods.
