World Environment Day 5th June 2025 RKMV, Shimla received "Himachal Pradesh Environmental Leadership Award”
On the occasion of World Environment Day, RKMV was conferred Environmental Leadership Award 2023-24 by the Hon’ble Chief Minister of Himachal Pradesh Shri Sukhvinder Singh ji on 5th June 2025. The award instituted by Department of Environment, Science Technology & Climate Change, HP (DEST & CC) was awarded to the college, who won the first prize in the category of academic institutions.
The college, under the dynamic leadership of Principal Dr. Anurita Saxena, has been instrumental in environmental conservation through awareness drives, sustainable practices, student engagement, and institutional initiatives. The prize was an acknowledgement and encouragement of the green initiatives taken up by the college, an adherent of plastic free campus. A Plastic Waste Shredder Machine was also awarded along with the prize money to the college.
RKMV has
• Made and sold 350 kgs of compost from the canteen waste
• Replaced plastic Momentos to the Chief guests or other guests by plants nurtured in house under Project Pyare Paudhe
• Responsibly disposed off 375 kg of one time use plastic collected from all over Shimla in association with the Municipal Corporation Shimla under Plastic Pickers campaign
• Conducted environmental awareness programmes in association with departments of Forest, Science and Technology and Pollution Control Board and NGO Healing Himalayas
• Organised International level workshops like Prakriti Se Sanskriti and Vanya Bhoj in association with DEST, NGO Earth Just & The Chefs Association of Himachal Pradesh
• Participated in world level Great Backyard Bird Count organised by Cornell University, USA in association with Bird Count India in which birders from over 24,000 hot spots all over the world uploaded eBird checklists
• Under Project Katran recycled textile waste into Potlis which have been used by Police department and DEST for presentations.
• Encouraged use of pre loved clothing
• Organised Diwali mela to encourage students to sell their Eco friendly products
• Encouraged students and faculty to switch to non plastic folders and fountain pens
• Helped self help groups in marketing their products
• RKMV is using Purifier water instead of mini plastic water bottles for in house parties since 2019
Significantly, on the occasion of the World Environment Day, RKMV and Healing Himalayas (NGO) jointly conducted a successful Cleanup Drive from Oak Over to Hotel Peterhoff , in which students and staff members of the college reaffirmed their commitment towards environment conservation and sustainability.
