Visit to the Geological Survey of India, Chandigarh
A group of students from Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalaya, accompanied by their teachers, visited the Geological Survey of India (GSI), Chandigarh, on an educational field trip organized by the Department of Chemistry. The objective of the visit was to provide students with practical exposure to geological studies and insight into the functioning of a premier scientific organization.
Under the auspices of Dr Vikas Bhardwaj, Director, GSI, the group received a warm welcome from the GSI staff, who delivered an informative presentation on the history, objectives, and contributions of the Geological Survey of India. The session highlighted the organization’s key roles in geological mapping, mineral exploration, groundwater assessment, and environmental research
During the visit, students observed an extensive collection of rock and mineral specimens, fossils, and geological structures from Himachal Pradesh and other parts of northern India. The staff demonstrated the use of modern instruments and analytical techniques, explaining methods employed in the classification and study of geological materials. The students also had the opportunity to visit the Chemistry Laboratory, where they learned about the chemical analysis of minerals.
Following the educational session, the group visited the Rock Garden of Chandigarh, encouraging creativity and environmental consciousness thus making the educational field trip educative, informative and memorable.
