Gender Sensitisation
Gender sensitization is the process of creating awareness and fostering positive
attitudes towards gender equality, dignity, and mutual respect. It enables
individuals to challenge stereotypes, understand gender-related issues, and
contribute to building an inclusive and equitable society.
Rajkiya Kanya Mahavidyalaya (RKMV), Shimla, the pioneer Government Girls' College in
Himachal Pradesh, is committed to promoting gender equality and women's empowerment
through education, awareness, mentorship, and capacity-building initiatives. The
institution strives to create a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment where
students develop confidence, leadership qualities, social responsibility, and
respect for human rights.

Key Initiatives
The college promotes gender sensitisation through lectures, workshops, awareness
campaigns, counselling programmes, legal literacy initiatives, cyber safety
awareness, health and hygiene programmes, self-defence activities, and participation
in NCC and NSS programmes.
Major Activities (2024–2026)
- International Women's Day Celebration (March 2026): The Women Cell, in
collaboration with NCC and Parivartan Foundation, organised a programme focusing
on women's empowerment, leadership, and the importance of women's participation
in social, economic, and political spheres.
- Anti-Chitta and Substance Abuse Awareness Programmes (November 2025):
Through rallies, awareness drives, Nukkad Natak, and interactive sessions,
students were educated about the dangers of drug abuse and their role in
building a drug-free society.
- Comprehensive Health and Wellness Camp (September 2025): Organised in
collaboration with DDU Hospital and the Department of AYUSH, the camp focused on
preventive healthcare, physical well-being, mental health support, and health
awareness.
- Aparajita Women's Health Awareness Programme (August 2025): Students were
sensitised about menstrual hygiene, reproductive health, cervical cancer
prevention, HPV vaccination, nutritional health, and PCOD awareness.
- Campus Cleanliness and Sanitary Hygiene Campaign (August 2025): The Women
Cell conducted awareness sessions promoting personal hygiene, responsible
sanitary waste disposal, and collective responsibility for maintaining a clean
campus environment.
- State-wide Anti-Drug Awareness Campaign (August 2025): Organised in
collaboration with Himachal Gyan Vigyan Samiti (HGVS), the campaign promoted
awareness about the harmful effects of drug abuse and encouraged healthy
lifestyles.
- Cyber Security Awareness Programme (July 2025): Students were sensitised
about cyber threats, data protection, online safety, and responsible digital
practices.
- Malala Day Lecture (July 2025): A special lecture by Ms. Geetanjali
Thakur, DSP (Narcotics) and RKMV alumna, highlighted the importance of women's
education, empowerment, resilience, and social responsibility.
- International Women's Day Celebration (March 2025): The Women Cell
organised an awareness programme where students were sensitised about the
Vishakha Guidelines, workplace sexual harassment prevention mechanisms, and
women's legal rights.
- Workshop on Laws for the Protection of Women (September 2024): Conducted
in collaboration with government departments, the workshop created awareness
about women's legal rights, protection laws, and welfare provisions.
- Workshop on Prevention of Substance Use (August 2024): Organised in
collaboration with Vyaktitva Foundation and Rotary Club Shimla, the programme
focused on substance abuse prevention, refusal skills, and informed
decision-making.
- Women Empowerment and Cyber Safety Programme (March 2024): Awareness
activities and an expert lecture sensitised students about women's empowerment,
cyber crimes against women, and online safety.
Role of Women Cell and Internal Complaints Committee (ICC)
The Women Cell and Internal Complaints Committee (ICC) play a vital role in
maintaining a gender-sensitive campus environment. Through awareness programmes,
counselling, mentoring, legal literacy initiatives, grievance redressal mechanisms,
and health and wellness activities, these bodies ensure a safe, supportive, and
inclusive atmosphere for all students.
Outcomes
The institution's gender sensitisation initiatives have strengthened self-confidence,
leadership qualities, legal awareness, health consciousness, digital safety, and
social responsibility among students. Through continuous engagement, counselling,
mentorship, and community outreach, RKMV remains committed to fostering gender
justice, women's empowerment, and an inclusive campus culture where every student
feels safe, respected, and empowered.
